Coworking spaces have upended office norms, transforming work and collaboration in the 21st century and highlighting the need to disrupt “business as usual” in favor of something a little more innovative, here are 10 Surprising Coworking Statistics.
To help showcase how impactful coworking is to modern life, we’ve compiled some of our favorite coworking stats to help tell coworking’s inspiring story.

  1. Flexible workspaces are on the rise.

Globally, the number of coworking spaces is expected to double between 2017 and 2022, rising from 26,000 to 49,500.

  2. As an industry, coworking is mostly made up of small players.

Even industry giant WeWork has just 1.7% of the total market, following up industry leader Regus. 86% of the market is outside the top 5 brands.

  3. Coworking is pivotal for networking.

82% of respondents in a recent Small Business Labs survey said coworking has expanded their professional networks – and 64% said it was an important source for their business referrals.

  4. Coworking provides a mood boost.

Most people – 89% – said they are happier since joining a coworking space, according to the Small Business Labs study; 83% reported they are less lonely.

  5. Coworking also provides a health boost. 70% of members reported feeling healthier working in a coworking space, according to areaworks. Health is a key focus for members – according to Allwork, physical and mental amenities are the most requested services.
  6. Diversity is increasing. In 2019, the majority of members were women (just crossing the 50% threshold), according to a deskmag survey. Age still averaged at 36, according to deskmag, but more older and younger respondents proportionally are joining coworking spaces.
  7. Coworkers tend to stick around. Most members (60%) said they planned to stay at their current coworking space, according to deskmag – an increase from 55% in 2018. One important piece of context: since the rise of employers using coworking spaces, as opposed to freelancers or entrepreneurs, is on the rise, in some cases, this is because of employer-driven decisions.
  8. Coworking can hone and develop skills. Between coworking space events and all the talented professionals sitting in a coworking space, most professionals walk away better skilled. In the Small Biz Labs research, 69% said they learned new skills, and similarly, 68% reporting improving an existing skillset.
  9. Coworking is for introverts, too. As it turns out, just 30% of coworkers say they are extroverts, and 22% describe themselves as introverts. The rest are mixed.
  10. Most coworkers don’t use the space like a Monday-Friday gig. Slightly fewer than half of coworkers (46%) spend 5 or more days per week in a coworking space, according to Clutch. Related, 22% of coworkers say they work exclusively in a coworking space – most employees are using a coworking space as a complementary solution.
